Switches are devices that is used to halt the flow of electricity in a circuit. In layman’s terms, a switch can either make or break an electrical circuit. Every electrical and electronics device employs at least one switch to control the device’s ON and OFF states. As a result, switches are a component of the control system, and control action is impossible without them.
Mechanical switches are divided into various types depending on multiple factors such as actuation technique (manual, limit, and process switches), the tally of connections (single contact and multi-contact switches), number of poles and throws (SPST, DPDT, SPDT, etc.), function and fabrication (push button, toggle, rotary, joystick, etc.), state (momentary and locked switches), and locked switches etc.
